چکیده

hilarity and movement (presumably including eye movement) during the compression phase due to the combined effects of warmth and nitrogen narcosis, thus assisting the flow of nitrogen-laden tears between the lens and cornea, while during decompression the chamber was, as is usual, rather cold and foggy, with the subjects relatively immobile, thus minimizing any flow of tears which might have helped to wash out the nitrogen. As the other eye was only slightly affected, it must be presumed that there was a difference in the fit, and hence in the flow of tears under the two lenses, causing either less absorption or better elimination of gas from the other eye.-I am, etc., JOHN BETTS. Sigmoid-colonic motility in health and irritable bowel syndrome: a role for 5-hydroxytryptamine.

Abstract Evidence suggests that sigmoid-colonic motility is increased in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) plays a role in the control of motility, but its involvement in the dysmotility seen in IBS remains unclear. To investigate the relationship between platelet depleted plasma 5-HT (PDP 5-HT) concentration and sigmoid-colonic motility in patients with I...

Stimulation of colonic motility by oral PEG electrolyte bowel preparation assessed by MRI: comparison of split vs single dose

BACKGROUND Most methods of assessing colonic motility are poorly acceptable to patients. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can monitor gastrointestinal motility and fluid distributions. We predicted that a dose of oral polyethylene glycol (PEG) and electrolyte solution would increase ileo-colonic inflow and stimulate colonic motility. We aimed to investigate the colonic response to distension by...

Utility of wireless motility capsule and lactulose breath testing in the evaluation of patients with chronic functional bloating

BACKGROUND The precise aetiology of chronic bloating remains poorly understood and underlying gastroparesis, small bowel bacterial overgrowth and colonic inertia may, individually or collectively, play a role. AIMS In this retrospective cohort analysis of symptomatic patients with chronic persistent bloating, we determined the clinical utility of wireless motility capsule and lactulose breath...

Increased Postprandial Colonic Motility and Autonomic Nervous System Activity in Patients With Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Prospective Study

Background/Aims The prevalence and severity of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) declines with age, but the cause of this is unknown. This study tested 2 hypotheses: (1) autonomic nervous system responses to eating and bowel distention, measured by heart rate variability (HRV), differs by age in IBS patients and (2) HRV is correlated with colonic motility and IBS symptoms. Methods One hundred an...

Zamifenacin (UK-76, 654) a potent gut M3 selective muscarinic antagonist, reduces colonic motor activity in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

BACKGROUND Zamifenacin is a new potent gut M3 selective muscarinic antagonist developed for possible use in irritable bowel syndrome. METHODS In this multicentre, double-blind, parallel group, placebo-controlled study, the effect of a single dose of zamifenacin 10 mg or 40 mg on both fasting (30 min) and fed (60 min) colonic motor activity was assessed in 36 patients with irritable bowel synd...

Randomized pharmacodynamic and pharmacogenetic trial of dronabinol effects on colon transit in irritable bowel syndrome-diarrhea.

BACKGROUND Genetic variation in endocannabinoid metabolism is associated with colonic transit in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with diarrhea (IBS-D). The nonselective cannabinoid (CB) receptor agonist, dronabinol (DRO), reduced fasting colonic motility in nonconstipated IBS. FAAH and CNR1 variants influenced DRO's effects on colonic motility. Our aims were: (i) to compare dose-related effects ...
